After His suffering, He showed Himself to these men (the witnesses) and gave many convincing proofs that He was alive (Acts 1:3). Confronting the killers of Jesus, Peter stated that this had been God's plan all along. God had allowed the murder of Jesus for the express purpose of defeating death. This Man (Jesus) was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put Him to death by nailing Him to the cross. But God raised Him from the dead, freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on Him (Acts 2:23-24). Yes, the impossible has happened! The Galilean returned from death - alive in body as well as spirit! Light escaped from the black hole! Suddenly we know that our "oughts" are not cruel lies. Life ought to surpass death - and it does! Life ought to have real purpose - and it does! Our Maker set "eternity" in our hearts because He knew His plan to defeat death for us. Suddenly allof life, and even death itself, glows with divine kindness or "grace."

For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made His light shine in our hearts (2 Corinthians 4:6). (God's) grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel (2 Timothy 1:9-10). The Gospel - the Good News - is that death is not the end of life. Those dread sisters, Death and Night, if they were ever queens, have been forever deposed. "Death has been swallowed up in victory!" (1 Corinthians 15:54). Immortality reigns! No matter how dark your circumstances, there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is a reason for living. There is a bright destination. In fact, the closer you get, the more you realize how brilliant your future is. They will see His face.... There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever (Revelation 22:4-5). In view of such a high destiny, how terrible to waste life as though it were "a mistake and a failure and a foolishness." Far from "achieving nothing," our deeds do follow us beyond death (Revelation 14:13; 20:12). Far from having "no consequence," life and its choices have the greatest possible consequence.
